Oxford Restaurants and DiningBeing home to such an enormous concentration of students, the university city of Oxford certainly offers up a whole host of eateries and dining options, ranging from restaurants and fast-food shops, to trendy gastro pubs and wine bars. However, since students rarely have a large budget when dining out, rest assured that many restaurants and similar eateries are quite affordable.

When it comes to lunchtime, Oxford's pubs serve as a safe bet, while if you are looking for food on the go, then sandwich shops, burger chains and bakeries provide a safe bet. For an evening meal, consider the restaurants concentrated around Cowley Road, Hythe Bridge Street, Bardwell Road, Banbury Road and Walton Street, as well as the High Street and George Street.

Situated next to the central library, the Westgate Shopping Centre is a popular spot for a coffee and light refreshments, at its Thornton's Cafe. Located on Cornmarket Street and alongside St. Peter's College, the Clarendon Centre is where you will find branches of Costa Coffee, the Cornish Kitchen, McDonald's and Millie's Cookies. On the south-eastern outskirts of Oxford, those shopping at Templars Square will find Chicken Hut, the Delight Kebab House, Domino's Pizza and a Greggs bakery.

Breakfast

If you plan to eat breakfast outside of your hotel, then Oxford offers various cafes and coffee shops, which include popular brands like Starbucks, Take a Break, The Coffee House, Riverside Café, Pret a Manger and Café Uno.

Those craving a fry up after a night on the town may like to enjoy a full English breakfast at the St. Giles Cafe next to Wellington Place, or at the Grand Cafe on the High Street, where smoked salmon and scrambled eggs is a good way to start the day. At the Queen's Lane Coffee House, the breakfast menu is an extensive one, ranging from full sausage and bacon bagels, to croissants and jam, oat porridge, yoghurt and berries, and toasted ciabatta.

Lunch

Oxford has more than 30 public houses in the city centre, not including the many college bars and pubs. These pubs often offer an extensive lunchtime dining menu, ranging from toasted sandwiches, baguettes and jacket potatoes, to more wholesome meals, such as steak and kidney puddings, sausage and mash, fish and chips, roast chicken and Sunday roasts. Good choices include the Turf Tavern on Holywell Street, the Bear Inn on Alfred Street, and the White Horse on Broad Street.

Dinner

Visitors to Oxford looking for somewhere to eat dinner will find many restaurants to choose between. At Gee's Restaurant on Banbury Road, dining tables are housed within a late 19th-century Victorian conservatory, with Oxfordshire farms supplying the Aberdeen Angus beef, lamb and pork.

Jamie's Italian on George Street offers Italian-style dining, although it can get busy at times, so table reservations may be beneficial. Situated on Walton Street, the Blanc Brasserie will provide a memorable night out in Oxford, with specialities including home-smoked salmon, lamb's liver, Loch Fyne mussels, seared North Sea cod and Toulouse sausages.
