The city of Oxford has excellent sports facilities, including a wide range of popular Oxford spectator sports, such as rugby and cricket. There are also good sports facilities in Oxford for participants, and these include Oxford golf courses, tennis courts, badminton courts, swimming pools, fitness centres and city gymnasiums.

The local Oxford newspapers provide a useful sports section, which regularly lists daily and weekly local sports events and competitions, which are held in and around Oxford's city centre.

The Oxford Rugby Union Football Club is located in central Oxford and rugby has a large following in Oxford. There are regular local rugby matches played in the Oxford area during the rugby season, but Oxford's most popular match, the Varsity Match against rivals Cambridge, actually takes place in Tickenham. Held each year in early December, this match dates back almost 150 years and is watched by millions on the television.

Football is one of the most popular spectator sports in the Oxford area and the city's main football team are Oxford United. Regular football matches take place during the football season at Kassam Stadium, in central Oxford, which has excellent facilities and seats around 12,500 spectators.
