Getting Around, Oxford Travel and Transport

Oxford Travel and TransportOxford is well served by the Oxford public transport system, which includes an impressive network of buses and trains, providing Oxford with good connections throughout England. The city of Oxford is situated nearby many other interesting towns; cities, tourist attractions and important landmarks, and many visitors in Oxford also travel outside of the city of Oxford, into the surrounding areas.

Renting a car is often the preferred method of transport for excursions from Oxford and it is relatively easy to travel around the Oxford area by car. There are a number of major roads situated on the outskirts of Oxford, which provide fast and convenient routes when travelling both to and from Oxford.




Oxford Travel by Airports
Oxford has excellent connections to a number of major airports. London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is just 90 minutes away, and London Gatwick Airport (LGW) is around 2 hours drive to Salisbury.

The district of Oxford is served by a number of major roads and nearby the city connects to the M40 and M25 motorways, which travel to cities including London. Although the traffic in and out of Oxford can be heavy during peak commuting hours (07:30 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 18:00), driving in central Oxford is fairly easy. A number of roads in central Oxford are one way only and part of Oxford city centre is restricted to buses and taxis only. Many tourists and visitors staying in the historic city of Oxford choose to rent cars and these are the best method of transport when travelling outside of the city, to explore the surrounding countryside and nearby towns. There are plenty of parking garages and off-street parking areas available in Oxford, although many areas are restricted to residents only and parking permits are required. There are also four park-and-ride services nearby the Ring Road, where you can park your can on the outskirts of Oxford and travel into the centre by bus. These large car parks are located in Seacourt, on the Botley Road, Pear Tree off the A34 Stratford road, Thornhill near to the Ring Road on the A40 London road and Redbridge, close to the Ring Road junction for the A34 south to Abingdon.

Oxford is well pedestrianized and one of the best ways to travel around Oxford is by foot. This is an excellent way to see some of Oxford's numerous tourist attractions, museums, galleries and landmarks. Finding your way around central Oxford is very straightforward and many of the city's major sights and attractions are within easy walking distance of each other.

The Oxford bus system is covers the city well and buses in Oxford are heavily used by both locals and tourists alike, providing a very inexpensive way to travel in Oxford and the surrounding areas. Oxford buses and coaches travel to many other towns and cities nearby, including Banbury, Didcot, Woodstock and Abingdon. Bus passes are available for set periods and these can be particularly convenient when travelling in Oxford. Most buses and coaches in Oxford depart from the main bus station in Gloucester Green, in the centre of Oxford, and there are also bus stops throughout Oxford, with bus timetables and route information.

The National Express coach service has numerous coaches that travel to London, including Heathrow and Gatwick airports, as well as many other locations throughout England.

Oxford's train station is located in Botley Road, close to the nearby bus station and Oxford city centre. The Oxford train station links to an excellent network of trains that travel throughout the country and this is the quickest way to travel to London - which takes around one hour, to Coventry - one hour, Birmingham - one and a half hours, Worcester - one hour and 20 minutes, and Hereford - two hours. Advance seat reservations can be booked if required and cycle racks are available outside of Oxford train station. The main connecting trains stations are Banbury and Didbury, which are nearby Oxford.

Taxicabs in Oxford are one of the most convenient ways to travel around the Oxford area and are usually reasonably priced. They can be easily caught from the taxi ranks outside of the Oxford train station, Oxford bus stations, on St. Giles, George Street and St. Aldates. Also in quieter areas of Oxford, taxis can be ordered by telephone and there are a number of reputable taxi firms that your hotel can recommend. Additional taxi charges in Oxford are often made for luggage, travel late at night, extra passengers and travel on public holidays.

Bicycles are a popular way to travel around recreational areas of Oxford in particular, and much of Oxford is generally very flat, although there are some hills outside of Oxford. There are also numerous cycle trails and pathways throughout Oxford and towpaths along the River Thames and the Oxford Canal, which are particularly scenic areas. Oxford has several of bicycle rental shops available in the Oxford area.
